Yesterday
firefighters took advantage of lower temperatures and higher humidity to advance
dozer lines and ensure any remaining surface heat along edges of roads are
out. These moderated weather patterns
are predicted to continue through Friday. Saturday should see the return of hotter and drier weather.
The current Fremont-Winema Area Closures may affect this Saturday’s
opening of deer and elk hunting for bow hunters in Oregon. According to the Oregon Department of Fish
and Wildlife, “hunters are encouraged to check fire restrictions before heading
out by calling the local Oregon Department of Forestry, U.S. Forest Service or
Bureau of Land Management office.
Hunters can also go to: http://www.oregon.gov/ODF/Fire/Pages/Restrictions.aspx to access an
interactive fire restrictions map.”
The Fremont-Winema National Forest Area Closure affects portions of the
forest around the incident to all vehicle and pedestrian entry. This includes
the Cold Springs Trailhead and the 3709 and 3710 Trails. Due to other fires in
the area, additional area closures may be coming that may affect the Pacific
Crest Trail (PCT) in the next day or two.
Forest Service Road (FSR) 3651 is closed at the 3659 junction about 1.75
miles south of Cold Springs Trailhead. Pelican Butte Road remains closed. The Westside Road is completely open and
unaffected by the closure order. All forest lands adjacent to the road are
closed.
The perimeter of the Area Closure includes all Forest Lands west of
Westside Road, east of Pelican Butte Road, north of the FSR 3554 and south of 3519.
Smoke continues to be an issue throughout the North Pelican Fire
vicinity. Smoke in the area is not only
coming from this fire but from numerous other fires burning throughout Oregon
and California. When smoke is visible, motorists are encouraged to drive with
their headlights on. Remember, if traveling on Westside Road or
through the Rocky Point area please be vigilant and drive with caution as
emergency traffic vehicles are in the area.
An online option for viewing the fire area is https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/publicmaps/keno/map.html. Winds from the north continued to push smoke into
the Basin today. Air quality advisories are available at www.klamathair.org.
