The North Pelican Fire, which was caused by lightning remains estimated at 900 acres with no containment. The fire movement has been primarily through the Eastern finger stretching toward the FS350 road. An anchor point has been established at that point and crews will continue to strengthen control lines from that anchor point.
Fire crews and equipment continue to clear Forest Service roads around the base of Pelican Butte. Dozers and hand crews continue to work clearing brush from along the sides and removing lower limbs from the trees that could be carrier fuels. Firefighters are working hard to extinguish any spot fires that ignite due to airborne embers in advance of the active fire edge. Objectives remain to keep an anchor point at the FS350 road and continue establishing control lines.

A closure for Pelican Butte Road has been requested and should be in effect by the end of the day. This is for safety reasons to keep Solar Eclipse viewers and any other non-emergency traffic from the area. No other forest or road closures are currently in place or being requested at this time. However if traveling on Westside Road or through the Rocky Point area, please be vigilant and drive with caution as emergency traffic vehicles are plentiful in the area. When smoke is visible, motorists are encouraged to drive with their headlights on. Please use extreme caution when driving near firefighters and equipment.
Yesterday afternoon, an influx of smoke pushed in from other regional area fires lingering within the basin. These conditions prevented mission attempts to obtain updated, accurate mapping. An online option for viewing the fire area is https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/publicmaps/keno/map.html. The winds from the north that are responsible for pushing the smoke into the Basin are expected to continue through today. Air quality advisories are available at www.klamathair.org.
A valued online resource accessible to the public is an interactive (Wildland Urban Interface) WUI map available at http://www.kcrsg.org/. You can plug in your address and see what your exposure is and learn more about what WUI means to you.
